• Which devices does the Able Remote support?

    Able Remote allows you to control your Google TV product. These include Logitech’s Revue and Sony’s TV’s and Blu-ray players that have Google TV. Able Remote also supports many features of devices connected to Google TV such as the TV, set-top box, audio receiver and Blu-ray player.

  • Can I control multiple Google TV devices with Able Remote?

    Yes. Use the ‘Menu’/'Switch Google TV’ option in Able Remote to switch between your Google TV devices.

  • Is Able Remote a universal remote?

    No. Able Remote only allows you to control your Google TV product and the devices connected to it like the TV, audio receiver, set-top box and Blu-ray player.

  • Does Able Remote work on a wired network?

    Yes. Your Google TV can be connected to your network with a network cable. Your Android device needs to be connected to your network over WiFi. Your Android device and Google TV needs to be on the same subnet to work. If Able Remote does not automatically detect your Google TV, you can manually add the IP address of your Google TV device.

  • Does Able Remote work on a wireless network?

    Yes. Your Google TV can be connected to your network via WiFi. Your Android device needs to be connected to your network over WiFi. Your Android device and Google TV needs to be on the same subnet and same WiFi band to work. If Able Remote does not automatically detect your Google TV, you can manually add the IP address of your Google TV device. If you fail to connect to your Google TV device, we recommend that you use a wired network connection for your Google TV device.

  • How do I determine the IP address of my Google TV?

    On your Google TV device, go to Settings/Network/Network Information.

  • How do I install the Able Remote app?

    Launch the Google Play Store app on your Android device. Search for “Able Remote“. Click the Download button to install the app on your device.

  • Able Remote does not want to install.

    The installation of the app is handled by the Google Play Store app. Sometimes it gets stuck in a mode and does not download and install apps properly. Rebooting the device sometimes helps to get the Google Play Store app into a good mode. Otherwise, you might have to attempt to install the app several times.

  • Why do I need to install the Able Remote app on Google TV?

    To allow notifications and for launching apps, the Able Remote app on your phone needs to communicate with the Able Remote app on your Google TV. If you do not install the Able Remote app on your Google TV device, notifications and remotely launching apps will not be supported.

  • The Google Play Store says Able Remote is not compatible with my devices

    There are two versions of Able Remote. Please make sure your are loading the right version of Able Remote. There is a version that you need to install on your Android device:
    Able Remote. And then there is a version that you need to install on your Google TV:

  • How do I purchase the Edit Feature?

    You can purchase the Edit Feature in the app ‘Menu/Settings’. Select ‘Purchase Edit Feature’.

  • Why do I have to pay for the Edit Feature?

    To change some settings and to edit the buttons, the app requires a minimal fee. The income is used to pay for the development costs of the app and to help us keep improving the app. If you don’t want to pay the fee, the rest of the app is still fully functional and free.

  • I get an error when I try to purchase the Edit Feature

    Please report any issues during the purchase transaction to the Google Play Store. The Google Play Store is responsible for handling the purchase transaction.

  • Does Able Remote work on tablets?

    Yes. Able Remote will run on any Android phones or tablets from version 2.2 upwards.

  • Does Able Remote support landscape orientation?

    Yes. Use the ‘Menu/Settings/Screen Orientation’ setting in Able Remote to configure the screen orientation. You can configure it to support a fixed orientation like portrait or landscape, or you can configure it to orient automatically based on the device orientation.

  • Able Remote does not want to pair with my Google TV device

    Make sure on your Google TV that ‘Settings/Input Devices/Connect to new IP remotes’ is checked.

  • Can I see SMS and Caller ID notifications on Google TV?

    Yes. You need to install the Able Remote app on your Google TV device. While Able Remote is the foreground app running on your mobile device, all incoming SMS and Caller ID notifications will be forwarded to Google TV. If Able Remote isn’t in the foreground, then notifications will not be forwarded to your Google TV.

  • I don’t see a contact photo for SMS and Caller ID notifications.

    If you have a photo stored on the phone for a contact, that should always appear. Due to differences between the contacts/address books from the various Android manufacturers, you might not get photos for all of your contacts if they are synced from online services. If you have multiple entries for the same contact, you also might not see the photo.

  • Why does Able Remote needs permissions for contacts and SMS?

    Able Remote will display a notification on Google TV for an incoming SMS or phone call. An attempt will be made to match the incoming phone number with the contact list and display that in the notification instead of the number. The contacts data isn’t used for any other purpose.

  • Can I see all the mobile notifications on Google TV?

    Yes. You need to install the Able Remote app on your Google TV device. Use the Settings menu option in Able Remote to enable All Notifications. You also need to enable the Accessibility feature on your device. Able Remote also needs to be selected as an Accessibility Service on the Accessibility settings screen.

  • Why does Able Remote needs to be configured as an Accessibility service?

    For technical reasons, the All Notifications setting in Able Remote uses Android’s Accessibility service and must be enabled in the Android Accessibility settings. Able Remote is intended to be a convenience tool and is not an accessibility tool.

  • SMS and Caller ID does not display on my TV

    By default, SMS and Caller ID notifications will only be displayed on your TV while Able Remote is the current active app on your mobile device. If Able Remote is not the foreground app, then incoming SMS and Caller ID information will not be forwarded to your Google TV. If you want notifications to be forwarded when Able Remote isn’t the foreground app, enable ‘Menu/Settings/Always Forward Notifications’. Forwarding SMS messages will not work with 3rd party SMS software.

  • Can I customize the buttons?

    Yes. Use the Edit option on the Able Remote menu to customize the buttons. Once you have selected the Edit option, Able Remote will be in edit mode. Click on each button you want to customize. For the device buttons, you can select from any of the device actions. For the app buttons, you can select any app that you have installed on your Google TV. For the channel buttons, you can select from any of the TV channels that you receive. Once you have completed your customizations, select the Edit menu option again to turn off edit mode.

  • I don’t see any channels when I use the Edit Buttons feature.

    Due to a technical limitation of Google TV, Google TV devices paired with DISH DVRs will not display any channels.

  • I can’t add any favorite channels.

    Due to a technical limitation of Google TV, Google TV devices paired with DISH DVRs will not provide the list of channels.

  • How do I show a photo from my Android device?

    You must have the Able Remote app installed on your Android device. Launch the standard Gallery app on your Android device. View a photo full screen on your device. There should be a set of buttons below the photo on the screen. If you do not see the buttons, tap on the photo once. Click on the Share button.

  • How do I show multiple photos from my Android device?

    You must have the Able Remote app installed on your Android device. Launch the standard Gallery app on your Android device. View the photos in the grid view. Press the Menu button and press the “Select Multiple” button. Tap on the photos you want to show. Press the Menu button again and click on the Share button.

  • I shared several items for a slideshow but it didn’t show everything.

    Only images are supported for a slideshow. If you shared a mixed list of images and videos then then only the first item in the list is shared.

  • How do I control a photo slideshow?

    Once you have shared multiple photos from your Android device to Able Remote, the slideshow will automatically start playing on your Google TV device. You can pause the slideshow by pressing the Pause button. You can restart the slideshow by pressing the Play button. During the slideshow, you can navigate to the previous photo using the rewind or previous gestures in the Playback touch control. During the slideshow, you can navigate to the next photo using the fast-forward or next gestures in the Playback touch control.

  • How do I show videos from my Android device?

    You must have the Able Remote app installed on your Android device. Launch the standard Gallery app on your Android device. View a video screenshot full screen on your device (do not play the video). There should be a set of buttons below the video on the screen. If you do not see the buttons, tap on the video once. Click on the Share button.
    Select Able Remote from the list. The video will immediately start playing on your Google TV device. Note that playback of videos is limited to the Google TV video formats and what each Google TV device manufacturer supports. (Watch the sharing video)

  • How do I share web pages from my Android device?

    You must have the Able Remote app installed on your Android device. Launch the Browser app on your Android device with the web address you want to share. Click the Menu button and then the More button. Select “Share Page” from the list. Select Able Remote from the next list. The web page will immediately appear on your Google TV device.   • How do I show YouTube videos from my Android device?

    You must have the Able Remote app installed on your Android device. Launch the YouTube app on your Android device. Navigate to the video you want to show. Click the More button and then the Share button. Select Able Remote from the list. The YouTube video will immediately appear on your Google TV device. (Watch the sharing video)

  • Can Able Remote control the TV volume?

    Yes. While Able Remote is running, the Android device volume up and volume down buttons will control your TV volume. If you have an audio receiver, the Android volume up and volume down buttons will control the audio receiver volume.

  • Does Able Remote support Google TV searching?

    Yes. While Able Remote is running, press the search button on your Android device.

  • Can Able Remote switch off the TV?

    Yes. Within the Able Remote app, click the Menu button and then click the Devices button. Select “TV ON/OFF” from the list.

  • Can Able Remote switch off the audio receiver?

    Yes. Within the Able Remote app, click the Menu button and then the Devices button. Select “AV Receiver ON/OFF” from the list.

  • Can Able Remote switch off the set-top box?

    Yes. Within the Able Remote app, click the Menu button and then the Devices button. Select “STB ON/OFF” from the list.

  • How I navigate between the buttons in the app?

    Swipe right or left across the button panels to navigate between the panels.

  • How I navigate between the touch controls in the app?

    Tap on the button at the bottom of the screen.

  • How do I navigate Google TV?

    Press the button at the bottom of the screen to change to the navigation panel in Able Remote. Touch and swipe your finger up, down, left and right to navigate. Swipe and hold your finger to repeat the navigation action. Tap the screen to confirm or select the current selection on the TV. Make a “C” shaped gesture to page down or up in lists.   • How do I manage the play controls on my TV?

    Press the button at the bottom of the screen to change to the playback panel in Able Remote. Touch and swipe your finger to the right to fast forward the current video or recording. Touch and swipe your finger to the left to rewind the current video. Tap on the screen to toggle between play and pause. (Watch the gestures video)

  • How do I navigate web pages?

    Press the button at the bottom of the screen to change to the mouse pointer panel in Able Remote. Use your finger to move the pointer around on the screen. Touch the screen with two fingers and move them vertically to scroll the page. Pinch the screen with two fingers to zoom the page. (Watch the gestures video)

  • How do I enable Google TV Voice Search?

    Use the ‘Settings/Voice Search’ menu option to select the Google Voice Search feature. This will only work on Google TV devices with version 3.0 or later software.

  • Why does Google Voice Search not work on my Google TV device?

    You need to have the Voice Search app installed on your Google TV device to be able to use the Google Voice Search feature. This will only work on Google TV devices with version 3.0 or later software.

  • What commands does the Google TV Voice Search suport?

    The Google Voice Search feature supports different commands than the Able Remote voice feature. The Google Voice Search feature has its own set of commands that behave similarly to the Able Remote voice feature.

  • Voice recognition does not work well

    Ensure that you are using the Google voice recognition engine. To enable the Google voice recognition engine on your mobile device select the home screen menu Settings option, Voice input & output, Voice recognizer. When saying a voice command, you might have to repeat the command several times so that the recognition engine can learn your pronunciation. Also speak directly into the microphone of your Android device.

  • What is the Able Remote voice command to change a channel?

    To change a channel, press the Voice button and start the voice command with the word “channel”. For example, “channel 300″ or “channel pbs” or “channel discovery”. (Watch the voice commands video)

  • What is the Able Remote voice command to change launch an app?

    To launch an app, press the Voice button and start the voice command with the word “app”. For example, “app netflix” or “app pandora” or “app chrome”. (Watch the voice commands video)

  • What is the Able Remote voice command to search Google TV?

    To search Google TV, press the Voice button and start the voice command with the word “search”. For example, “search dr who” or “search help” or “search disney”. (Watch the voice commands video)

  • What is the Able Remote voice command to play music?

    To play using using Google’s Play Music app, press the Voice button and start the voice command with the word “play”. For example, “play firework” or “play forever young”. The track name is matched by the Google Play Music app and can be strict and might not always match your track. Also, if a track is matched it will play automatically, but if a playlist or album is matched it will only be selected due to technical limitations with the API. (Watch the voice commands video)

  • How do I hold and drag with the touch control?

    Use the touch control on the 3rd panel to move the pointer to the location you want to drag. Now lift your finger and then put it down again on the touch control. Hold you finger in place for a second and then move your finger to drag.

  • Can I change the name of my Google TV?

    Yes. Launch the Able Remote for Google TV app. Click on the “Update Name” button. Enter the new name for your Google TV device. Select the “Save” button to save the name.

  • Can I share links with my Google TV from my computer?

    Yes. Google has a Chrome extension called Chrome to Phone that allows you to share links with Android phones. You can also share links with your Google TV using the same extension by enabling it on your Google TV under Settings/Input Devices/Chrome to TV.

  • How do I create a macro?

    Use the ‘Menu’/'Macros’ option to create a macro.

  • How do I run a macro?

    Add the macros button to your button panel using the ‘Menu’/'Edit Buttons’ option. When you press the macros button, you will get a list of all your macros. Select the macro you want to run.

  • I have to press a button a few times before it works

    The Google TV devices uses IR blasters to control other devices. Make sure that the IR signal has line-of-sight to the device you want to control. If the device buttons don’t work every time, it probably means the IR signal has trouble getting to the device.

  • How does the weather button know my location?

    Google TV knows your zip code and from that it can determine the latitude and longitude for that area. The Google TV device does not know your exact GPS location or your physical address.

  • How regularly do the weather button update itself?

    The data for the weather button is updated once every hour.

  • The weather widget does not display alerts for my area

    Currently weather alerts are only supported for the USA. The alerts are provided by the National Weather Service.

  • How do I add the Android widget to remotely control Google’s Play Music app?

    On your mobile device, press ‘Menu/Add/Widgets’. Select ‘Able Remote Play Music’ from the list of widgets. You will be prompted to select which Google TV to control.

  • How do I share my button layout?

    Once you have configured your button layout, use ‘Menu/Share Button Layout’ to share the layout. You can share the layout by email or use Google Drive or Dropbox.

  • How do I import a button layout that has been shared with me?

    Open the layout file on your mobile device to import the button layout. After the layout has been imported, use ‘Menu/Switch Button Layout’ in Able Remote to select the imported layout.

  • How do I backup my app settings?

    Use ‘Menu/Backup’ in Able Remote to backup the app settings including the button layout. The settings are backed up on the SD card.

  • How do I restore my app settings?

    Use ‘Menu/Restore’ in Able Remote to restore the app settings from the SD card.

  • When I use the keyboard, some letters and words are repeated.

    If your keyboard has an auto-suggestion feature, disable that to fix the issue. If the issue persists, use another keyboard.

  • Why are there errors when doing the Netlix setup?

    There could be connectivity issues or issues with the Netflix servers that could cause the request for the login page to fail. Press the retry button if that is displayed or press the back button and try again. If you get an authentication error, force stop Able Remote and try again.

  • I’m getting an authentication error with Netflix.

    Go to ‘Menu/Settings/Clear Netflix Credentials’ in Able Remote to reset the Netflix data. Then try to configure the Netflix queue again.

  • Why are the buttons a solid color?

    If you are running Android 4.1 please make sure the Developer options ‘Force GPU rendering’ is disabled.

  • I get an error message when I use the enhanced picture-in-picture feature.

    There are some technical limitations with the enhanced picture-in-picture (PIP) feature: you cannot interact with other apps on the screen and you cannot independently control the audio. So get your favorite app ready and then add the enhanced PIP on top.

  • Able Remote does not control devices with Vizio Co-Star.

    The Vizio Co-Star device does not have an internal or cabled IR blaster. Only the Co-Star physical remote has a IR blaster. The physical remote can be used to send the IR commands for IP remotes such as Able Remote, but it is disabled by default. The remote goes into power save mode when the physical buttons aren’t pressed. You have to disable power save: Settings -> Devices -> Bluetooth -> Vizio XRA700 Remote -> Remote power save -> Off. The remote will be on all the time and can then be used to forward the IR commands for Able Remote. You have to point the remote at the devices and of course the remote battery will be drained faster.

  • Able Remote does not show a logo for my favorite TV channel.

    Able Remote will try to find a matching logo for your favorite channel using various text matching techniques. However, some times the name cannot be matched since it might have unique characters or invalid spelling. Use the “Add TV Channel Manually” button instead. The name field of the channel provides auto-complete suggestions, so you can find the matching channel you are looking for.

  • The top button panels don’t show any buttons.

    The empty button panels mean that Able Remote cannot connect to the Able Remote app on your Google TV. Make sure that both the Able Remote app on your mobile device and your Google TV device are running the latest version. You might also have to restart your Google TV device.

  • I can’t type the ‘@’ character in Chrome.

    This is a bug on Google TV. We have reported this to Google several times now but they have still not fixed the issue. Unfortunately, technically only Google can fix the issue.

  • Does Able Remote support other Android-based TV devices?

    No, Able Remote only supports official Google TV devices.

  • How does Able Remote support Arduino microcontrollers?

    Able Remote can now control devices attached to Arduino microcontrollers which run the CIAO protocol. This feature is still experimental and might change in a future release. You have to enable this feature in ‘Menu’/'Settings’. Able Remote will then automatically detect any actions supported. You can then use the ‘Menu’/'Edit Buttons’ option to add a button for that Arduino action. This feature requires technical expertise, but does allow you do do your own home control or home automation solution. Watch this video to see this feature in action.

  • Is Able Remote affiliated with Google Inc.?

    No. Able Remote is based on the code of the Google TV Remote, but has been developed independently by Entertailion LLC.
