The Impact of Being Featured in the Google TV Market, Part 2

In our previous post about being featured in the Google TV Market, we published some data that showed a big boost for Able Remote

It has been a week since we were also asked by the Google TV marketing team to do a guest blog post on the Google TV blog. Able Remote got promoted to the top banner in the Google TV Market 2 days after the blog post.

We thought it would be interesting to other developers to report on the impact it has had on our app.

We decided to compare the growth in the data for the last week (after the blog post) with the week before that (after being featured):

  • Net installs [Market Developer Dashboard]: 115%
  • In-app purchases [Market Developer Dashboard]: 157%
  • Active users [Flurry Analytics]: 133%
  • Web site traffic [Google Analytics]: 138% [visits], 134% [page views]
  • Intro video views [YouTube Analytics]: 116%
  • Ratings/comments [Market Developer Dashboard]: 153%

Getting featured and doing a guest blog post both significantly helped the numbers for Able Remote, but it seems that getting featured in the Google TV Market had a bigger impact.

Able Remote 2.1.0 Released in the Android Market

Able Remote 2.1.0 for Google TV has been released in the Android Market.

Turn your Android device into a Google TV remote. Now a featured app in the Google TV Market!

Able Remote 2.1.0 includes:

  • Edit feature device buttons are labeled
  • Caller ID and SMS notifications display contact photo
  • Macros added spotlight app support
  • New buttons: previous, next, TV power

We have seen a number of comments from users who mistakenly think there are remote control features missing from Able Remote. We have decided to release this version with labeled buttons in the Menu/Edit buttons screen to make it clear what each icon means.

We have also changed the way Caller ID and SMS notifications are displayed to users. If there is a photo in your contacts for the incoming call, then Able Remote will display that on your TV. Note that the new notification mechanism does not add to the notification history on your TV; you can enable the previous kind of notification in the app Settings.

App Discovery

We are considering adding a new feature to Able Remote that will let users discover popular Google TV apps easier.

We have seen developers and users complain about the difficulty in discovering good apps in the Google TV Market app. Although we are currently getting very good exposure by being featured by the Google TV Market, before that happened our app was buried deep in the market listing below many battery indicator apps! So we know what its like struggle to get attention in the Market.

Since Able Remote lets users quick-launch their favorite apps, we could track that and combine the data from users to determine which apps are popular or trending for Google TV. The combined results could be displayed to users as recommended apps to try on their Google TV.

We would like to get feedback if such a feature would be of interesting to users. And also how you feel about tracking user data (with permission and anonymized of course)
